WEEK ONE- BABY LED WEANING WITH KAI

by Caitlin

The end of this week signifies the first full week of weaning for Kai. He has joined us for Breakfast, Lunch and dinner and he has been over the moon about it!

With Max, I very much did a combination of Baby led and purees but this time round I’m not wasting my time or money with the pouches. I arrived at this decision early in the week, we were out and about and I hadn’t brought a lunch for the boys. We popped to boots and purchased a sarnie for Max ( easy peasy) and an Ella’s Kitchen pouch for Kai.

Max wolfed down his lunch and helped Kai with the pouch (the boy doesn’t know when to stop). Kai had not problem eating the thick puree. Once we returned home I noticed that Kai had been sick. This had never happened when eating normal food.

I think the reason for this is when he is eating at the high with us all he can pick and choose what he wants to consume. He is the one in control and when he has had enough he can just play with it or stuff it down the side of the high chair when he thinks I’m not looking (Max used to feed the Imaginary dog), but when he is being spoon fed he doesn’t know when to stop. Remember Kai is only 6 months old he hasn’t quite grasped the concept of being full or pushing the spoon away when he has had enough.

Baby-led weaning promotes independence in my opinion and that seems to work well with my kids.

I have noticed that Kai is a little more gaggy that Max used to be, but again I know that’s something he will work out. I took a first aid course when Max was a baby to make sure I was confident on what to do with Gagging or choking. Also to recognise the difference between the two.

WEEK ONE MEAL PLAN:

I thought I would share with you all what Kai ate for the first full week just to give you all a bit of a snapshot into our weaning lives:

Breakfast: We have tried to mix it up with breakie. He has sampled lightly buttered toast, fruit and banana pancakes (I’ve finally mastered them after this disaster- Breakfast fail)

Lunch: Luch is the one part I haven’t mastered so far. This week he tried ham and cheese pinwheels (which he loved) and he had his first jam sandwich (don’t judge now).

Dinner: He’s been having what we have for dinner. So Roast chicken, Beef Hotpot and Sausage Pasta bake. Obviously, he isn’t eating everything but they do say food is for fun until there one.

We have introduced lots of fruit and veg, but he also has the odd biscotti. I think it’s all about balance!!

We’re in for a messy few weeks/years it’s going to be fun seeing Kai try new foods.
