My self hosting journey into the unknown… a bloggers tale

I spoke briefly about going down the self hosting route in previous posts (you can read them here).

I made the decision a few weeks back that YES my blog is good enough to warrant going self hosted.

I’d (much to the surprise of my husband ) kept the blogging up pretty consistently and have been gaining a steady stream of followers.

I’ve really enjoyed working hard on it each night and putting in my heart and soul.

The majority vote for hosting provider was TSO so I decided to give them a go. I also purchased my domain name from them. Annoyingly .com was taken so that’s going to have to be something I need to deal with a little further down the line.

I must say the recommendation was worth it, so far TSO have been great.

The actual migration took about 10 minutes (my site is fairly small, around 250 posts) If your site is on a larger scale then I would imagine it will take slightly longer. I was expecting the site to be down for around 48 hours. I couldnt believe how quickly they turned it around, I also received a direct contact as soon as the migration had taken place.

Any questions I have had TSO have been able to answer in a timely fashion. They are only able to migrate over text and media so it’s a good idea to make a note of what Widgets you will need to reinstall.

One of the biggest draws for  going self hosted is the control you have over your blog.

You will find that you are very restricted on the free wordpress platform, self hosting allows much more blogging freedom.

I would recommend staying on if you are a hobby blogger or if you are blogging just for fun. Once you are posting regularly and promoting these posts that’s when you might want to look into going self hosted.

If you are looking to make money from your site then you will need to take the big step and go it alone. Many companies will only work with bloggers with their own DA (Domain Authority, something you will only get if you are self hosted or purchase a domain name)

My DA currently stands at 1/100 and I’m hoping to build on this over the upcoming months.

If you are interested in finding out what DA is or your score then I would definitely recommend a visit to Moz at

I plan on doing a series of posts to guide you through the changes I have made to my blog from themes to widgets and plug-ins.

I feel like I’m learning something new everyday, I would love to share the knowledge I’m picking up and hopefully be in a position to help other bloggers who are just starting out.

If you have any questions about what was involved with going self hosted with TSO please feel free to ask me.

If you would like to check out TSO please click here. This is a affiliate link and I do get a small kick back if you choose to go ahead and purchase.

It’s a really huge daunting step,  you will be completely responsible for your own site now.

That comes with a complete set of new worries.

Good luck with making the decision to go self hosted.

I’ve just gone self-hosted with TSO and have found them great. I really can’t believe how much I’ve had to learn in the last couple of weeks and I still feel like I’m at the tip of the iceberg. Good luck x

Good luck with your self hosted journey. I am now on wordpress having moved this year from self hosted Blog Engine, I’m not a fan of the tech side but you just have to get competent with it to sort stuff out. A guide is a great idea. #TwinkleyTuesday

I really like wordpress I found the free platform pretty easy to use and the self hosted platform isn’t to scary. With the support and advice from others you can achieve anything I say 🙂

I’ll be following your journey, I’ve thought often about moving to self-hosted. Right now I pay for the premium plan on wordpress but I may need to move out on my own if I’m going to continue. #TwinklyTuesday

Its much cheaper to go to a hosting company. I paid 7 quid for my domain i think and the hostings 15 quid a year.

Congratulations on going self hosted! I did it earlier this year with TSO Host and it was the best thing I ever did. I feel as though it looks way more professional and my blog has been taken much more seriously by brands ever since. It was stressful though as I am clueless when it comes to computers, I feel as though I deserved a medal afterwards! #TwinklyTuesday

I’ve found it a lot more straight forward than I thought I would. I think groups like UK Parent on facebook are a massive help.I was pretty clueless before joining now I feel a little more knowledgeable.

I went self hosted (my blog probably isn’t good enough) but I wanted more options and after a few months I’m slowly getting my head around it! Google has been my saviour along with other bloggers 🙂 #TwinklyTuesdays

It’s a lot to take in isn’t it. Esp if your not overly technical (which I’m not). Im sure your blog is fine. I hear this phrase all the time (my blogs not good enough) I’ve been guilty of saying it myself, but really how do we measure what is good and what isn’t?

This is something I keep toying with the idea of doing. My blog is just a hobby and I don’t make money out of it but I still have this niggle that I want to be self-hosted but I just don’t know whether to go for it! Will be looking out for your guides. #TwinklyTuesday

I think if you think your blog may grow into something more than it is then absolutely go for it. Thew good thing about being on the free platform is that you don’t really need to think for yourself in terms of looks and widgets , everything is provided for you.It is a big step and one I ummed amd ahhed about for about a year.I have found that since going self hosted I’am taking my blog far moire seriously which is never a bad thing.

Oh well done to you. I can really relate to all you speak about. I really want to go self-hosted in the New Year. Currently I’m working hard on my posts, blogging regularly and seeing my views steadily grow – so I think taking the leap in the New Year will give me some time to just keep promoting and writing until then. I really want to get into it. I would love if you could do some posts just breaking things down – I am still really confused, scared and daunted by it all. I will definitely be following your posts if you do more in relation to this topic – keep me updated 🙂 #twinklytuesdays

Fantastic. Good for you. Great feeling isn’t it? I went self hosted with TSO back in April and I haven’t looked back once. I even totally messed up some very important settings and they fixed it for me within minutes of receiving the support ticket! I can’t fault them. I hope you’re enjoying your new blog. I can’t stop messing with the layout of mine now I have the options! Great fun! #twinklytuesday
